Spain, French Occupation of Catalonia, Rosellon, copper Double-Sol, (Sueldo), 1644, Perpignan, countermarked with a hand holding the head of John the Baptist (KM —; Castan-Cayon —; Heiss p. 321/2; Duplessy 1609 (without countermark); Ciani 2930-31; Botet y Sisó 949-958). About fine, scarce (£30-40)

The significance of the countermark of the patron saint of Perpignan, John the Baptist, is not explained by Heiss and is not known to the cataloguer. In 1659 the county of Rosellon, formerly part of Catalonia, was surrendered by the Spanish monarchy to France.
