Charles William Shipton was born in Bromley-by-Bow, London, in 1885, and served with the 2/2nd London Field Company,Royal Engineers (Territorial Force) during the Great War on the Western Front. He was killed in action on the First Day of the Battle of the Somme, 1 July 1916, when his unit was attached to the 56th (London) Division and went over the top with the lead battalions, and he is buried in Sailly-au-Bois Military Cemetery, France.
