Ian Vaughan Bremridge Melhuish was the son of Mr and Mrs J. B. Melhuish of Taunton, Somerset. He was educated at Bromsgrove School, and had a place at Emmanuel College, Cambridge which he was due to take up in 1914. Instead Melhuish served during the Great War with the 7th (Service) Battalion, Somerset Light Infantry in the French theatre from 24 July 1915. He was killed in action whilst serving with the Battalion on the Western Front, 27 October 1915.

Second Lieutenant Melhuish is buried in the Rue-Du-Bacquerot (13th London) Graveyard, Laventie, France, and is commemorated on the Bishops Hull memorial in Somerset.
