David Smith is shown in the Muster Rolls as having enlisted into the 2/73rd Foot on 11 May 1812, from the Lanarkshire Militia, for limited service. This battalion was formed in 1812 largely from men of various Militia regiments. Smith is shown as ‘Wounded in General Hospital’ in the Muster dated 24 June 1815, and still in General Hospital in the following Musters for July and August. Having recovered he rejoined the regiment at Derby in December 1815. He transferred to the 1st Battalion on 4 May 1817, and was discharged at Colchester on 10 June 1817, his period of limited engagement probably having expired.
