Olympia Angelo Milella joined the Rand Rifles on 2 October 1914, and served with them during the Great War in German South West Africa before transferring to the 4th South African Infantry for service on the Western Front. He was promoted Corporal on 22 September 1917, and Sergeant on 17 January 1918, and was twice wounded during the German Spring Offensive of 1918, in the left eye on 5 April, and then severely in the head on 26 April. He was discharged on 22 May 1919, and was awarded the Military Medal.
