Robert Loftus Tottenham was born in 1865, the son of Major Robert Loftus Tottenham, and the great-great-grandson of the 1st Marquess of Ely, and was commissioned Second Lieutenant Royal Sussex Regiment. He transferred as Lieutenant to the Indian Army in 1885, and served with the 25th Bengal Native Infantry during the Relief of Chitral in 1895. He was promoted Captain in 1896; Major in 1903; and retired with the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel on 13 May 1911. He died on 24 January 1925.
