William Henry Durrant was born at Cheriton, Kent, on 14 October 1876, and joined the Navy on 26 October 1894, as a Stoker 2nd class; Stoker, 1 June 1895; Leading Stoker 2nd class, 1 April 1899 and 1st class, 3 September 1900; Stoker Petty Officer, 1 July 1906; Acting Chief Stoker, 4 September 1906 and confirmed in that rate on 4 September 1907. He was awarded his L.S. & G.C. medal on 13 December 1909. Although he re-engaged ‘to complete’ for pension in October 1906 and should have retired in October 1916, he instead joined the Royal Fleet Reserve with new Official no. Chatham A2826, and continued in service until finally demobilised on 17 February 1919.
