Joseph Sykes received his medical training at Madras and Glasgow University; Hospital apprentice, Sub-Medical Department, Madras, 29 June 1874 to 23 September 1876; L.R.C.P. Edinburgh, 1879; L.F.P.S.G. 1879; Surgeon, Bengal Medical Department, 31 October 1879; Surgeon-Major, 31 October 1891; Lieutenant-Colonel, 31 October 1899; Retired, 14 December 1909. Served on the North West Frontier, Mahsud-Waziri, 1881; Egypt 1882, including actions of Tel-el-Kebir and Kassassin (Medal with clasp, bronze star). Lieutenant-Colonel Sykes died at Folkestone on 5 May 1925.
