Joseph Ward, a native of Blackburn, originally enlisted into the East Lancashire Regiment before serving with the 2/5th Battalion Lancashire Fusiliers on the Western Front. He died of wounds on the 13 August 1916, shortly after his battalion had taken part in an attack on Guillemont on the 9 August. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, France.

Arthur Longley, a native of Huddersfield, served on the Western Front with the 17th (Service) Battalion (1st South East Lancashire), Lancashire Fusiliers. He was involved in a patrol into no man’s land on the 10 September 1918, which suffered heavily from German machine gun fire. He was among the killed and is buried in Perth Cemetery (China Wall), Belgium.

Henry James Derrett was born in Chelsea, Middlesex and originally enlisted into the Royal Fusiliers. He served on the Western Front with the 19th (Service) Battalion (3rd Salford) (Pioneers), Lancashire Fusiliers. He was killed in action by shell fire while working on a road building project in the Ypres area, which was “under direct observation from the enemy”. The battalion suffered 4 killed and 10 wounded. He is buried in White House Cemetery, St. Jean-les-Ypres, Belgium.

Joseph J Mcgovern originally served the Lancashire Fusiliers before finally transferring to the Labour Corps.

Samuel Dyson, a native of Rochdale, enlisted on 9 December 1915. He served on the Western Front with the 15th (Service) Battalion (1st Salford) Lancashire Fusiliers from 25 November 1916. He was invalided home after suffering a gunshot wound to the hand on 2 June 1918. He was discharged from the army on 10 October 1918, no longer physically fit for war service.

Fred Pearce Aitchison served on the Western Front with the 19th (Service) Battalion (3rd Salford) (Pioneers), Lancashire Fusiliers. He was later posted to the 1/5th Battalion, before returning to the 19th Battalion.

James Dunn originally served with the Lancashire Fusiliers before transferring to the Labour Corps.

Arthur Blake enlisted on 21 August 1914 and landed at Gallipoli with the 1st Battalion Lancashire Fusiliers on 14 May 1915. He later transferred to the 1st Battalion King’s (Liverpool Regiment) and was discharged from the army on 16 January 1918, no longer physically fit for war service.

Lawrence William Whittingham served on the Western Front with the 16th (Service) Battalion (2nd Salford) Lancashire Fusiliers.

Joseph Hughes, a native of Bury, Lancashire served with the 1/5th Battalion Lancashire Fusiliers. He died of wounds on 6 April 1918 after his battalion was involved in two very hard day’s fighting at Bucquoy. He is buried in St. Hilaire Cemetery Extension, France.
