Naval General Service 1793-1840, 2 clasps, 1 June 1794, 23 June 1795 (Richard Higgins.) nearly extremely fine £2400-2800

Richard Higgins served as Carpenter’s Crew in H.M.S. Queen for the fleet action that became known as ‘The Glorious First of June’. A total of seven Large Naval Gold Medals and 15 Small Naval Gold Medals were awarded for the action; Higgins served as the same rate and with the same ship at the defeat of the French fleet and capture of three ships of the line by Admiral Bridport off the Isle de Groix, Brittany, 23 June 1795.

Richard Higgins was born in Sutton, Berkshire, and entered service in the Royal Navy as an Able Seaman with H.M.S. Queen in December 1792. He was appointed Carpenter’s Crew in March 1794, and two years later saw brief service with H.M.S. Royal William.
