H. Gandy was commissioned Second Lieutenant in the Loyal North Lancashire Regiment, and was promoted Lieutenant on 21 January 1918.
Two men with the name Arthur Aked are recorded on the Commonwealth War Graves Commission Roll of Honour: a Private from York in the 17th Battalion, Northumberland Fusiliers, who was killed in action on the Western Front on 29 November 1917, and is buried in Buffs Road Cemetery, Belgium; and a Private from Halifax, Yorkshire, in the 9th Battalion, King’s Own Yorkshire Light Infantry, who died of wounds on the Western Front on 23 October 1918, and is buried in Inchy Communal Cemetery Extension, France.
