W. R. F. Goodfellow attested for the Seaforth Highlanders and served with the 1st Battalion in the Sudan in 1898, before transferring to the 2nd Battalion and serving in South Africa during the Boer War. He was twice wounded, at Magersfontein on 11 December 1899, and again at Paardeberg on 18 February 1900.
