Hammer Price:
£380

British Iron-Age, ICENI, Uninscribed issues, base gold Stater, British J [Norfolk Wolf type], degraded head of Apollo right, rev. crude wolf left, bird seated on back, pellets above and below, 5.17g/1h (ABC 1399; BMC 218ff; VA 610.3; S 31). The obverse image unusual, good very fine, rare £400-500

Many staters are struck from obverse dies that are too big for the flan. Most Wolf staters show the hair, wreath and profile of the degraded Apollo head. On this specimen, much of the head is missing, leaving the profile and a zig-zag pattern which is normally off the flan. It appears to help make up a picture of what the complete die looked like
