Lionel Varmen served with the 28th (Saskatchewan) Regiment, Canadian Infantry during the Great War on the Western Front, and was killed in action on 19 April 1916. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium.

Sold together with two County of Middlesex Silver Jubilee Medals 1935, both in white metal; a Borough of Southampton Silver Jubilee Medal 1935, gilt, with top riband bar; an unofficial ‘Empire’ Silver Jubilee Medal 1935, gilt, all unnamed.
