Albert Teed was born in Budleigh Salterton, Devon, on 24 November 1869, and joined the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class on 29 May 1885. Appointed Ordinary Seaman on 24 November 1887 when serving in H.M.S. Agincourt, he was promoted Able Seaman on 1 August 1890; Leading Seaman on 2 November 1893; Petty Officer 2nd Class on 21 April 1894; and Petty Officer 1st Class on 7 May 1897. He transferred to H.M.S. Esk on 4 July 1900, a 3rd Class Gunboat on the China Station, and served in her as part of the Naval Brigade during the Boxer Rebellion. He transferred to H.M.S. Cambridge on 23 November 1903, and was awarded his Long Service and Good Conduct Medal on 21 January 1904. He was discharged to pension on 27 November 1909, and joined the Royal Fleet Reserve at Devonport on 9 January the following year. Recalled to active service following the outbreak of the Great War, he served in the light cruiser H.M.S. Aurora for most of the conflict, from 5 September 1914 to 4 December 1917, and it was whilst serving in this ship that he was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal, for miscellaneous services between 1916-17, during which the Aurora was variously engaged in mine laying operations, and was part of the force that covered the seaplane raid on the Zeppelin base at Hoyer, 24 March 1916, and the bombardment of Ostend, 5 June 1917. He transferred to the newly commissioned H.M.S. Curlew on 5 December 1917, and remained in this ship until he was demobilised on 20 May 1919.
