By Admiralty Order 4784/61 dated 28 August 1861, one Indian Mutiny Medal with ‘Lucknow’ clasp, one ‘Relief of Lucknow’ clasp and twenty ‘Lucknow’ clasps, were issued to marines who in the original Medal roll were omitted as entitled recipients. These additions were made by Captain Vaughan C.B., R.N. Private John Wright's ‘Lucknow’ clasp was one of those mentioned above which were sent late, and had to be placed loose on the ribbon since there was no lug attachment on his ‘Relief of Lucknow’ clasp already issued.

He was born in Holt, Norfolk, on 29 June 1838 and enlisted aged eighteen years at Chatham on 27 June 1855, having previously served in the West Norfolk Regiment of Militia. He joined H.M.S. SHANNON on 28 September 1856 from Chatham, 89 Coy, and ultimately paid off to Chatham on 15 January 1859. He purchased his discharge from the Corps for twenty pounds on 4 February 1859. It is noted on his papers that he was “In Action at Kudjura, the release of Lucknow and Cawnpore, and the taking of Lucknow with SHANNON's Naval Brigade when in India 1857-8”.
