George Mathews was born in Londonderry, Ireland, and attested there for the 14th Foot in January 1843. He was promoted Corporal on 29 May 1849; Sergeant on 10 November 1852; Colour-Sergeant on 10 May 1854; and Sergeant Major on 9 October 1855. He was awarded the L.S. & G.C., which would have been surrendered upon receipt of the Meritorious Service Medal with annuity of £10. He was discharged 15 March 1864, having served 21 years and 67 days with the Colours.
