Queen’s South Africa 1899-1902, 3 clasps, Cape Colony, Orange Free State, Transvaal (2738 Pte. A. Preece, S. Wales Bord:) extremely fine £300-360

A. Preece was slightly wounded at Modderfontein, in the Gatsrand, on 31 January 1901, when it was attacked by a strong force. The garrison made a fine defence, but was forced to surrender before help arrived. Of about 200 men of the battalion that formed the main part of the garrison, some 16 were killed and four times that number wounded.

Preece afterwards died of self-inflicted wounds at Mooi River on 11 November 1901.
