Walter Montgomery was born in the Parish of Saltcoats, Ayrshire, and enlisted for the Royal Scots at Glasgow on 8 January 1896, aged 22 years 6 months, an engineer by trade. He was appointed bandsman on 1 November 1898, transferred to the Army Reserve as Private on 16 January 1904, and was discharged from A.R. on 7 January 1908. He served in India from September 1896 to January 1904, including the campaign on the North West Frontier of India 1897-98 (Medal and 2 clasps). Sold with copied discharge papers.
