Henry John Burridge was born in the Parish of St Cuthbert’s, Wells, Somerset, and enlisted into the Royal Engineers at Wells on 9 April 1885, aged 20 years 3 months, a carpenter and joiner by trade. He was appointed Lance-Corporal in November 1886; promoted 2nd Corporal, August 1888; Corporal, October 1889; Sergeant, November 1892; Mechanist Coxswain Staff Sergeant, September 1901. Served overseas, Halifax N.S., 11-22 May 1886; Ceylon, 1888-92.
