Robert S. Cockburn served with the 2nd Volunteer Battalion, King’s Own Scottish Borderers, in the South African War. He served in France from 18 September 1915, with 344 M.T. Coy., A.S.C., and later with 43 Training Reserve Battalion, before joining 2/4th Lincolnshire Regiment, which unit took part in the suppression of the Irish Rebellion in 1916.
