Pair: Quarter Master Sergeant John Robertson, 26th Foot

Military General Service 1793-1814, 1 clasp, Corunna (J. Robertson, Qr. Mr. Serjt. 26th Foot); Army L.S. & G.C., W.IV.R. (J. Robertson, Qr. M. Serjt. 26th Regiment Foot. 1833) fitted with original steel clip and ring suspension, light edge bruising and contact wear, otherwise nearly very fine (2) £1600-1800

John Robertson was born in the Parish of Stewartown, Ayr, and attested for the 26th Foot at Haddington on 22 October 1807, aged 23 years, a weaver by trade. Promoted to Corporal in April 1809, he was reduced to Private in July 1810, and promoted back to Corporal again in January 1815. He was promoted to Sergeant in May 1819, to Sergeant Major in May 1825, and to Quarter Master Sergeant in October 1827. He served abroad ‘Four years in the East Indies (or from 9th September 1828), in Gibraltar ten years, in Spain and Portugal one year, the remainder at home.’ He was discharged at his own request at Meerut on 31 October 1832, at which time his conduct was described as being ‘that of a good and efficient soldier, seldom in Hospital, trust worthy and sober.’

He was struck off the regiment’s strength in January 1833 and from Meerut travelled to Calcutta, joining the Invalid detachment sailing home, arriving in April 1833. He was officially discharged on a full modified pension at Horse Guards on 10 July 1833, having been awarded his L.S. & G.C. medal with gratuity. Sold with copied discharge papers and full muster details for his entire service.
