A Rear Gunner’s D.F.M. awarded to Sergeant Derek Rogers, No. 77 Squadron, Royal Air Force
Distinguished Flying Medal, G.VI.R. (1809158 Sgt., R.A.F.) nearly extremely fine

D.F.M. London Gazette 4 August 1944. Joint citation with Sergeant R. G. Blackwell: ‘One night in June 1944 these airmen were mid-upper and rear gunners respectively in an aircraft detailed to attack an enemy target. On the return flight the aircraft was intercepted by a fighter which closed in with guns firing. Extensive damage was sustained but Sergeants Blackwell and Rogers coolly and skilfully fought back, using their guns with great effect. The enemy aircraft was struck many times by their bullets and finally caught fire and dived steeply towards the ground. These airmen have taken part in many sorties and have at all times displayed notable skill, vigilance and determination.’
