Charles Henry Mitchell was commissioned Second Lieutenant in the West Yorkshire Regiment on 11 March 1915, and served with the 1st/6th Battalion, West Yorkshire Regiment during the Great War. He was killed in action on the Western Front on 3 September 1916, whilst serving with “A” Company, on which date the Battalion took part in the attack on the trenches near St. Pierre Divion. They suffered heavy losses by machine gun fire from Pope’s Nose, and during hand to hand fighting at the German front line, and after strong enemy counter attacks were forced to withdraw having suffered 241 casualties. Mitchell is buried in Mill Road Cemetery, Thiepval, France.
