Queen’s South Africa 1899-1902, 3 clasps, Relief of Kimberley, Paardeberg, Johannesburg (3119 Pte J. Moran, 1st. Rl. Irish Regt.) nearly extremely fine £100-140

John Moran was born in 1866 in Waterville, Co. Kerry, Ireland, and attested for the Royal Irish Regiment at Clonmel on 23 November 1888, having previously served with the 4th Battalion Royal Irish Regiment. He served for a year at home and six years in India before transferring to the Army Reserve in 1896. He re-joined in 1898 and served during the Boer War with the 1st Battalion Royal Irish Regiment, being engaged in the Relief of Kimberley and the battles at Paardeberg and Johannesburg. He was discharged on 6 December 1901.

A Lance Corporal J. Moran of 1st Battalion Royal Irish Regiment was Mentioned in Despatches during the Boer War.

Clasps confirmed in the medal roll. The Royal Irish Regiment were not present as a unit at the actions represented by the clasps. Approximate numbers of clasps issued to men of the Royal Irish Regiment are as follows: 105 Johannesburg, 137 Relief of Kimberley and 138 for Paardeberg. Approximately 15 men were awarded this combination of clasps, including one Officer, Lieutenant Galbraith.
