Gordon Watling was born on 14 September 1867 and received a commission into the Royal Lancashire Regiment as Second Lieutenant on 14 September 1887. Appointed to the Indian Army, he was posted to the 16th Bengal Infantry with the rank of Lieutenant on 12 May 1889, and served with the Regiment during operations on the Punjab Frontier in 1897-98, where he was present at the actions at Malakand, Utmankhel, and Buner, and the taking of the Tanga Pass. Promoted Captain on 14 September 1898, he was appointed to the 16th (Lucknow) Rajput Infantry on 3 April 1891, and served as Company Commander from 4 August 1900. He received his Majority on 14 September 1905, and subsequently served with the 13th (Shekhawati) Rajputs, receiving the 1911 Delhi Durbar Medal. His next appointment was as Company Commander and Second in Command of the 4th (Prince Albert Victor’s) Rajputs, on 31 July 1912. After eight months leave back in England, he returned to India and was promoted Lieutenant-Colonel on 14 September 1913. He served during the Great War as Second in Command of the 11th Rajputs, before retiring with the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel on 1 February 1921.
