John William White was born in December 1909 and enlisted in the Royal Artillery (Territorials) in February 1938. Drafted to 148 Field Regiment, R.A., he was embarked for Singapore from Brisbane, Australia after the outbreak of hostilities, and was taken P.O.W. on 15 February 1942.

Initially incarcerated at Changi, he was embarked for Tonsha, Thailand in October 1942, where, as a member of a working party, he undertook three acts of sabotage in early 1943.
