Percy Howard Guest was born in Benares, India, on 22 May 1873 and attested for the Rifle Brigade at Dinapore, India, on 22 October 1888. Appointed a Bandsman on 4 June 1893, he was promoted Corporal on 17 December 1898, and Band Sergeant on 30 November 1899, and served with the 4th Battalion in South Africa from 16 December 1901 until 3 February 1903. Awarded his Army Long Service and Good Conduct Medal in 1907, he was discharged on 24 September of that year, after 18 years and 338 days’ service. As well as serving as Band Sergeant, he was also a talented marksman, and on one occasion won the Battalion’s Savile Prize for best shot.
