Donald McInnes
was born on 9 January 1836 in London, and attested for the 74th Highlanders at Westminster on 9 January 1850. Appointed a Drummer on 29 October 1852, he served with the Regiment in South Africa during the Third Kaffir War 1850-53, and was promoted Corporal on 23 April 1864, and Sergeant on 24 January 1867. After attending Kneller Hall on a Bandmaster’s Course, he transferred, with the rank of Bandmaster, to the 71st Highland Light Infantry on 1 June 1872, and was awarded his Army Long Service and Good Conduct Medal, with a Gratuity of £5, in 1874. He was discharged on 5 February 1878, after 24 years and 29 days’ service, of which nearly 21 years had been spent overseas, and was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal with an Annuity of £10 on 27 July 1904. He died at Hounslow, Middlesex, on 19 June 1919.
