The China Medal 1900 awarded to Private, later Captain A. W. Staughton, Royal Marines, who was wounded at Tientsin, 27 June 1900, served in Gallipoli and died of wounds in France, 26 December 1916

Albert William Staughton was born in Paddington, London on 10 December 1878 (?). A Warehouseman by occupation, he enlisted into the Royal Marine Light Infantry at London on 2 October 1896. Served on H.M.S. Aurora, February 1899-November 1900, being promoted to Corporal in July 1900. Promoted to Sergeant in October 1904, Colour-Sergeant in March 1913, Quartermaster Sergeant/Instructor of Musketry in June 1914 and Sergeant-Major in May 1915. Landed with the Pekin Relief expedition and received bullet wounds to both legs in action at Tientsin, 27 June 1900. It is recorded that his China Medal was presented to him by the King on 8 March 1902. Awarded the L.S. & G.C. Medal in April 1912. In the Great War he served with the Plymouth Battalion R.M.L.I. in operations around Dunkirk, Cassel and the Defence and Retreat from Antwerp. In Gallipoli, with the 2nd R.M. Battalion he landed at Seddul Bahr, 4 March 1915 and at “Y” Beach on 25 April 1915. In May 1915 he was promoted to Sergeant-Major and appointed Temporary Lieutenant. Was invalided, suffering from dysentery, from September 1915 but was present at the evacuation of the Gallipoli Peninsula in 21 January 1916. After leave, he rejoined the 2nd R.M. Battalion in the 63rd Royal Naval Division, B.E.F. from June 1916, having been appointed Temporary Captain. Staughton was wounded whilst serving in France, 13 November 1916 - gunshot wounds to left thigh and right arm. He died of his wounds at the General Hospital, Camiers, France on 26 December 1916. He was buried in the Etaples Military Cemetery.
