Charles Hugh Houghton was born on 15 March 1820. He enlisted into the Royal Navy on 23 September 1841 and joined the ship’s company of H.M.S.
Vixen as 3rd Class Engineer two days later. He then served on H.M.S. William & Mary, July-December 1846 and was advanced to 2nd Class Engineer in September 1846. He served aboard H.M.S. Dauntless, August 1850-May 1853, serving in the Baltic and was advanced to 1st Class Engineer in June 1851. On H.M.S. Dauntless once more, June 1854-March 1857, he was advanced to Acting Chief Engineer in June 1854 and confirmed in that rank in September 1854. His last seagoing appointment was on H.M.S. Asia, December 1859-January 1870, and he was placed on Retired Pay on 1 April 1870. Discharged dead 28 July 1883. With copied service paper.
