Fred Atherton was born in Eccleshall, Sheffield, lived in Beighton, Sheffield and enlisted at Sheffield. Serving in the 2nd Battalion Yorkshire Regiment, he entered the France/Flanders theatre of war on 5 October 1914. He was killed in action on 30 October 1914 and buried in the Harlebeke New British Cemetery. With copied m.i.c. and casualty details. Entitled to the clasp to the 1914 Star.
