Roland Griffiths was born in Hanley, Staffordshire, lived in Gunnislake, Cornwall and enlisted at Plymouth, originally serving in the Devonshire Regiment. As a Drummer in the 1st Battalion Welsh Regiment, he entered the France/Flanders theatre of war on 28 January 1915. He was killed in action on 25 May 1915, aged 28 years. Having no known grave, his name is commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial. He was the husband of Lily Mary Griffiths, of Wheal Josiah Cottages, Great Consols, Tavistock, Devon.
