Silver Star (2), edge numbered, ‘31282’, unnamed, split brooch; another, edge numbered, 114784’, unnamed, with oak leaf cluster, full wrap brooch; Purple Heart, edge numbered, ‘68994’, reverse hand engraved, ‘Matt Nelson’, slot brooch; Victory Medal 1918, official type 2, 4 clasps, Defensive Sector, Meuse-Argonne, St. Mihiel, Aisne-Marne, with two stars on ribbon, full wrap brooch; Army of Occupation Medal 1918-23, split brooch, State of New Jersey Victory Medal 1917-18, complete with brooch bar; France, Verdun Medal, very fine and better (7) £350-400

Private Matt L. Nelson, Headquarters Company, 61st Infantry, was wounded in action on 16 October 1918. He was awarded the Purple Heart on 1 June 1940. He was cited for distinguished conduct in action during the Aisne-Marne Offensive whilst serving in Company ‘E’ in the 59th Infantry, 8th Infantry Brigade, 4th Infantry Division A.E.F. (ref. G.O. No. 30 of 8th Infantry Brigade, 25 November 1918) and again for action during the Meuse-Argonne Offensive whilst serving in H.Q. Co. 61st Infantry, 9th Infantry Brigade, 5th Infantry Division A.E.F. (ref. G.O. No. 11 of 9th Infantry Brigade, 31 December 1918). His first Silver Star was authorised on 13 July 1933; his second on 13 June 1940. With copied research confirming the Silver Stars and Purple Heart. With lapel badge.
