Defence Medal, Canadian issue in silver; Canadian Volunteer Service Medal, with overseas clasp; War Medal 1939-45, Canadian issue in silver; Canadian Memorial Cross, G.VI.R., ‘Sgt. W.O.A.G. G. W. Tompkin R133613’, this suspended from an ornate silver bow; with Birks Memorial Bar, officially inscribed, ‘Sgt. G. W. Tompkins R.C.A.F. Died in his Country’s Service 9 Apr 1943’, good very fine and better (5) £140-180

George William Tompkins was born in Castleton, Ontario on 23 July 1915. Employed as a Machinist and Electrician and living at 22 High Park Boulevard, Toronto, he attested for the Royal Canadian Air Force on 15 September 1941. Stationed in Nassau, Bermuda with No. 111 Operational Training Unit, flying Liberators, he was reported as ‘Missing’ on 9 April 1943 as a result of a flying accident. He was later presumed to have died on that date. Sergeant (Wireless Operator Air Gunner ) Tompkin’s name is commemorated on the Ottawa Memorial. He was the son of John and Florence Tompkins, of Frankford, Ontario. With copied service papers and copied photographs of the recipient and others.
