Carry, 2/119/Infy.) note spelling of surname; Serbia, Order of the White Eagle, 4th class breast badge with swords, these sometime detached and now sewn to badge, original court mounting, good very fine (6) £1200-1500
Thomas De Beauvoir Carey was born on 10 October 1881.
Educated at Blundell's School, Tiverton, he was first commissioned 2nd Lieutenant, 1st Royal Guernsey Light Infantry, 1898; 2nd Lieutenant, Royal Fusiliers 1900; Lieutenant 1901; Captain 1908. He transferred to the Indian Army, to 119th Infantry (2/9th Jat Regiment) in October 1913 and was promoted to Major in September 1915; Lieut.-Colonel, December 1923; on various commands and raising of new units during and after the Great War; retired 1928.
He served in Tibet 1903-4 with the 1st Royal Fusiliers, including action at Naini, capture of Gyantse Jong, march to Lhassa, May 3rd to July 6th, 1904 (Medal with clasp). Mesopotamia 1915-16; Battle of Shaiba, mentioned in despatches; 2nd Battle of Kurna; invalided for enteric fever 1915; rejoined in Mesopotamia, attempted relief of General Townshend's force at Kut-el-Amara, April 1916; severely wounded in third unsuccessful attack of 7th April; invalided to India. Lieutenant-Colonel Thomas Carey died in 1945. Sold with an original group photograph and a copied group photograph, both of officers of the Royal Fusiliers, mostly identified.
