Pair: Private John Revell, 14th King’s Light Dragoons

India General Service 1854-95, 1 clasp, Persia (J. Revell, 14th King’s Lt. Dgns.); Indian Mutiny 1857-59, 1 clasp, Central India (I, Revell. 14th Lgt. Drgns.) light contact marks, otherwise good very fine (2) £800-1000

John Revell was born at St Margarets, London, and enlisted into the 44th Foot on 4 April 1843, aged 17 years 11 months. He was promoted Corporal in May 1847 and the following September transferred into the 14th Light Dragoons, but was reduced to Private shortly afterwards by Court Martial.

His discharge papers describe his services as follows: ‘Served with the Persian Expedition in 1857. Served with the Central India Field Force in 1857/58 under the command of Major Genl. Sir Hugh Rose, K.C.B. Was present at the Capture of Rathghur 29th Jany. Action at Barodia 31st Jany. Capture of Garrakota and pursuit of the Rebels 13th Feby. Forcing Muddenpore Pass 3rd March. Battle of Betwa 1st April. Siege and Capture of Jhansi 5th April. Action at Koonch 7th May. Battle of Gollowlee 22nd May. Advance on and capture of Calpee and pursuit of the Rebels 23rd May. Capture of Morar Cantonments 16th June. Recapture of Town & Fortress of Gwalior 19th June 1858. Wounded slightly at the battle of Betwa, 1st April 1858.’

He was discharged on 23 June 1863, being unfit for further service owing to bronchitis and deafness. Sold with copied discharge papers.
