Thomas Buist was born in Springfield, Fifeshire on 17 December 1855. He entered the Royal Navy as an Acting Engine Room Artificer on 8 June 1878, being confirmed in that rank in February 1880. Served on H.M.S. Sphinx, November-December 1884 and February-April 1885. Promoted to Chief Engine Room Artificer in May 1890 when on H.M.S. Rodney. Pensioned ashore 5 June 1898.
