Able Seaman Alma Griggs, R.N.V.R., serving on the sloop H.M.S. Laburnum, accidentally drowned on 9 December 1916. His name is commemorated on the Chatham Naval Memorial. Griggs was born in Wisbech, Cambridgeshire and was the husband of Alice Griggs, of The Elms, Shepperton, Middlesex.
H.M.S. Laburnum shelled the outskirts of Galway in April 1916 during the Easter Rising.
