At the outbreak of war the 16th Lancers were stationed at the Curragh, Ireland. They entered France on 16 August 1914 as part of the 3rd Cavalry Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division.

Walter Norman Andrews was born in Canterbury in 1888. Enlisting into the 16th Lancers c.1910, he entered the France/Flanders theatre of war on 17 August 1914. He was commissioned into the 3rd Battalion Essex Regiment on 26 June 1918 and served in Egypt, 26 September-11 November 1918. In the 1920’s he transferred to the Indian Army, serving as Adjutant & Quartermaster at the Small Arm’s School in India, 16 July 1923-31 May 1925. Later joining the Bombay Sappers and Miners, he attained the rank of Major & Quartermaster in 1933. After serving throughout the Second World War, he retired on 1 June 1945.
