The Ashcrest was torpedoed and sunk by the U-140 while bound for the U.K. from Philadelphia on 9 December 1940, 36 of her crew, including Baxter, losing their lives. Aged 21 years, he was the son of Josiah and Gwendoline Baxter of Bordesley Green, Birmingham, and is commemorated on the Merchant Navy Memorial at Tower Hill, London; sold with further details.
