John Bellis was born in Chester, lived in Hightown, Manchester and enlisted at Bury, Lancashire. Serving with the 1st Battalion Lancashire Fusiliers, he was killed in action in Gallipoli, 25 April 1915. His name is commemorated on the Hellas Memorial. He was the husband of Julia Bellis of 101 Pemberton Street, Hightown, Manchester.

On the day he was killed at the Lancashire Landing Beach, his regiment won 6 Victoria Crosses - ‘six VCs before breakfast’.
