John Richardson Auldjo was born in Montreal, Canada, on 16 March 1825, and received a classical and mathematical education at the Upper Canada College and Quebec Classical School. He was appointed Ensign in the Bengal Army on 28 February 1844, and arrived at Calcutta on 15 July 1844, to do duty with the 36th Bengal Native Infantry. He served with his regiment in the 1st Sikh War 1845-46, and was present at the battle of Aliwal (Medal). Promoted to Lieutenant in June 1847, he served throughout the Punjab campaign of 1848-49, being present at Ramnuggur, the passage of the Chenab, Sadoolapore, and the battles of Chilianwala and Goojerat (Medal with 2 clasps).

Auldjo commanded the left wing of his regiment during the annexation of of Oudh in 1856. He was appointed Adjutant of his regiment in April 1857, which appointment he held until the 36th N.I. was disbanded in June 1858, and officiated as Major of Brigade at Jullundur in October 1857. He was appointed a Lieutenant of Police by the Punjab Government in June 1858, to raise and command a Sikh Police Battalion, which subsequently became the 10th Bengal Police Battalion. He held this command until 4 November 1860, and served against the mutineers in Oudh in 1858-59 and in the Tirhoot on the Nepal border (Medal). He also commanded the Infantry portion of the escort of the ex-King of Delhi, from Delhi to Cawnpore in October 1858.

Subsequently promoted to Captain in September 1860, to Major in September 1866, and to Lieutenant-Colonel in February 1870, he retired with the rank of Major-General on 14 June 1876. Major-General Auldjo died at Myrtlebank, Scotland, on 14 June 1879.
