Arthur Thomas Walker was mentioned in despatches for his services as a Temporary Warrant Electrician aboard H.M.S. Orion during operation “Shingle”, the Allied landings at Anzio in January 1944 (London Gazette 1 August 1944 refers). The cruiser Orion had earlier participated in the Sicily and Salerno landings, and was subsequently present in operations off Normandy and the South of France.
Walker’s service in the depot ship Medway suggests he may have been a submariner in the period leading up to the 1939-45 War.
