M.C. London Gazette 2 April 1919; citation 10 December 1919 ‘For conspicuous gallantry and initiative when on reconnaissance at Vieville and Fesnoy on 4th November 1918; near Le Sart on 5th November and South of Cartignies on 6th and 7th November. Ulick de Burgh Browne was born on 30 March 1898, the only son of the 6th Marquess of Sligo and Agatha Stewart. He held the courtesy titles of Viscount Westport and Earl of Altamont. Educated at Eton and Sandhurst, he entered the Royal Scots Greys as a 2nd Lieutenant on 16 August 1916 and was promoted to Lieutenant in April 1918. Gaining the M.C. during the last days of the Great War, he retired as a Captain in 1928. In 1935 he succeeded his father as the 7th Marquess of Sligo. In addition to the above, he was also Earl of Clanricarde and Baron Monteagle. After retiring from the Army, he retired to Westport House, Co. Mayo. During the ‘Emergency of 1939-45’, he established a first aid station at Westport House, fully equipped a fire engine and ambulance for use in the district and was a Group Leader in Section B of the Local Defence Forces.
