John Carpenter was born in the Parish of St. George’s, London, c. 1827. Serving in the 95th Regiment, he was ranked as an Armourer Sergeant at the time of the Indian Mutiny. Latterly serving with the Corps of Armourer Sergeants, he was discharged in August 1866 in order to enlist into the Royal Marines as an Armourer Sergeant to the Woolwich Division. At the time of this enlistment, his former military service was reckoned to total 15 years, 141 days. Armourer Sergeant John Carpenter, 4th Company, Chatham Division R.M.L.I., was awarded the Royal Navy L.S. & G.C. in November 1873 with a gratuity of £10. Sold with copied R.M. enlistment papers and related documents.
