Edward Charles Edwards was employed as an Assistant with Spencer & Co. Ltd., of Bangalore, Wine Merchants and Army Contractors. After serving in the ranks of the Volunteers he was granted a commission as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Bangalore Rifle Volunteers on 29 January 1907; he was advanced to Lieutenant in October the same year. At this rank he was awarded the Volunteer Force Long Service Medal in 1909, ref. I.A.O. 269 of May 1909. Edwards was promoted to Captain in December 1911 and as such he was awarded the Indian Volunteer Force Officers’ Decoration, this published in the Gazette of India of 26 April 1913. He attained the rank of Major in May 1913. In the Great War he was appointed a Captain in the I.A.R.O. on 14 September 1915 and he acted as Adjutant of the Bangalore Rifle Volunteers.
