The World, a relatively unsuccessful New York newspaper founded in 1860, was purchased by Joseph Pulitzer in 1883 and a new, aggressive era of circulation building began. In 1890 Pulitzer built the New York World Building, the tallest office building in the world at the time (razed in 1955 to make way for a new approach to the Brooklyn Bridge). Cristóbal de Larreátegui y de la Cerda-Palafox (1837-1910), 11th Duke of Veragua, Marquis of Jamaica, 13th Admiral of the Indies, served in the Spanish Government as Minister of the Interior in 1890 and Minister of Marine in 1902. He, with President Cleveland, opened the World’s Fair in Chicago on 1 May 1893, and he was made an honorary citizen of New York
