Robert Colin Cook, the son of Edward and Susan Cook of Thames, Auckland, was killed in action in the battle of El Alamein on 24 October 1942, while serving in the 21st Battalion, New Zealand Infantry - his unit faced determined opposition beyond the crest of the Miteirya Ridge, many casualties being caused by mortar and machine-gun fire directed from well-defended battle posts. Cook was 27 years of age and is buried in the El Alamein War Cemetery.
