Richard Goodman Furness was born in Bloomsbury, London. A Clerk by occupation, he attested for the Army Hospital Corps at Bodmin on 7 January 1884, aged 19 years, 2 months. With the Army Hospital Corps and Medical Service Corps he served in Egypt, November 1884-March 1889. He was transferred to the Army Reserve in May 1889 and was discharged in January 1896. Having been a ‘Section D’ Reserve since April 1896, he rejoined the Army in October 1899 and served in the R.A.M.C. in South Africa, November 1899-April 1901. Back in England he re-enlisted for further service with the R.A.M.C. in July 1901, being discharged in July 1905 having completed his period of service. Sold with a number of copied service papers, which list as his sole medal entitlement, the Queen’s South Africa Medal with clasps for Tugela Heights, Relief of Ladysmith, Transvaal and South Africa 1901.
